What X-Rays Can—and Can't—Tell You About Your Spine

doctor examining xraysWhen most people hear “X-ray,” they picture a scan to check for fractures, tumors, or dislocations. But if you’re visiting a chiropractor who focuses on structural rehab, the X-ray plays a very different role, and only shows part of the picture.

Why These Images Matter in Chiropractic Care

At Lindenwoods Chiropractic, X-rays help us assess the alignment of your spine and posture. Unlike hospital scans that look for pathology, we’re examining the shape, structure, and position of your spine to understand how it’s impacting your nervous system. Why does that matter? Because poor alignment creates pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, it affects your body’s ability to heal and function.

As Dr. Dan explains, “We want to understand what your spine has gone through… the more distorted your spine is, the more pressure there is on the spinal cord and nerves.” That pressure can translate to pain, tension, and even early degeneration. And often, these changes develop long before symptoms show up.

It’s Not Just About Pain

X-rays show us how far your spine has shifted from its ideal position. The greater the shift—and the longer it’s been there—the more wear and tear we see. That doesn’t always match what a person feels. You can have a severely degenerated spine and feel okay… or a fairly healthy-looking one and be in agony. It’s not always about how bad things feel. It’s about how well your spine is actually functioning.

But They Don’t Show Everything

Although they yield valuable information, X-rays can’t do it all. They won’t reveal soft tissue damage—like disc herniations or ligament strains. If needed, that’s where an MRI might come in. But for the vast majority of cases, your X-ray gives us the structural insight we need to tailor your care.

And even if we see significant spinal damage, it’s never too late to improve. “If we do the right things,” says Dr. Pascal, “even someone with significant arthritis can still have a pretty darn good quality of life.”
