The Stages of Sciatica - From Mild to Serious

man with sciatica back painIt’s one of those conditions you don’t fully understand until you’ve experienced it—sciatica. It might start with lower back discomfort or tingling down the leg, but over time, it can progress into sharp pain and even affect your mobility.

Winnipeg chiropractor Dr. Dan explains, “Sciatica refers to irritation or symptoms along the longest nerve in the body—the sciatic nerve.”

Early Warning Signs

In its early stages, sciatica often presents as a dull ache in the lower back, buttocks, or upper leg. You might also notice tingling or numbness.

“Early symptoms may just be mild lower back pain, buttock pain, or a sense of pressure or tingling in the upper leg,” explains Dr. Dan.

If left unaddressed, the pain can progress—moving past the knee, down the calf, and even into the foot—becoming more intense and harder to ignore. Some patients describe it as sharp, burning, or electric-like, making everyday movements increasingly difficult.

When It Becomes Chronic

Long-term sciatica—lasting more than three months—can lead to nerve damage, muscle weakness, or even visible changes in leg muscles. When somebody starts feeling weakness or more of that numbness and weakness, that’s definitely a sign to see, ideally a chiropractor, or another type of medical professional.

This ongoing nerve pressure can also cause changes in gait or balance, further limiting mobility.

Relief Starts With the Right Care

It’s critical to reduce inflammation and relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve. Targeted stretches, posture corrections, and chiropractic care can all make a big difference. Dr. Dan recommends specific home stretches and notes. Lindenwoods Chiropractic has a YouTube video about which stretches and exercises for sciatica to use.
